The Power of Words

Virtues that Shape Effective Communication 

Recently, someone asked me to share a few thoughts on good communication skills. As I was writing, the virtues of sincerity, honesty, and patience reoccurred consistently. (If you ever want to discover how virtues apply to your daily life, pick a topic and start writing!)  

The Divine Gift of Words and Connection 

Communication is at the center of most misunderstandings. It is our means of sharing our thoughts and ideas. Ultimately, this is how God revealed Himself to us: “The Word became flesh and dwelt among us” (John 1:14).  These words are Jesus speaking directly to us. This truth shows us that words matter and are the means to live in communion or friendship with Jesus, who is “the way, the truth, and the life,” and with each other (John 14:6).  

Virtues in Action 

If we live in relationship with the Word of God, we learn the importance of communication and the purpose of developing good skills. Virtues enable us to remain steady and use the power of reason, shaped by prudence, in our conversations or forms of communication. Speaking honestly in a sincere and authentic manner establishes mutual respect. All of this is fundamental to our relationship with each other.  

The Role of Patience in Listening 

Finally, there is another virtue needed for good communication—patience. Patience enables us to do more than hear; it helps us to listen. When we listen attentively to others, we pause our own opinions or interpretations of what the person has said. We listen in the same measure by which we want to be heard by others. This requires patience if the other person takes a while to communicate their thoughts.  

Embracing Our Unique Gift of Language 

We should all strive to be more sincere and patient in our daily conversations. The fact that we are the only creatures with language as a means of communication is astounding! And even more amazing is that God the Father sent His Son to communicate His love to us.
