Last week, I mentioned that I give presentations on the virtues and have the audience read through a list of virtues. I also stated that Jesus is the perfectly virtuous man. This statement can require more reflection, but I often see it resonating as people read—until they get to the virtue of patriotism. At first, it seems like a head-scratcher, until I remind them of Jesus telling Peter to render unto Caesar what is Caesar’s.

Patriotism is part of loyalty. It enables one to pay due honor and respect to one’s country through speech and action. It is a service for the common good, which includes civil leaders, the military, etc. Furthermore, it calls forth respect and loyalty from citizens for our country, including its history, flag, monuments, public property, and national holidays.

So why is it important to include patriotism as a virtue? Virtue is the mean in the middle—between two extremes. It prevents us from leaning too much in either direction. If we remain too loyal to a political party or person, our values may be compromised; with too little patriotism, we may become apathetic and do nothing. So, let us pray for an authentic resurgence of this beautiful virtue.
