From my recent pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela, the manifestations of orderliness stand out in my memory. We had a small pilgrim group, which consisted of people from various Christian faiths. Yet, we shared a common unity as we journeyed to our final destination. Providentially, the responsorial psalm for Mass on the last day served as a capstone: “Guide me, Lord, along the everlasting way.”
Present in my memory is one pilgrim who took the hand of our Lord as He guided her steady, orderly pace for the over 120km (about 74mi) walk. As she grasped her hiking poles and walked, her ready smile shined with each movement of her steps. Gracious and kind, her spirit possessed the hope of the future of her remaining years and everlasting life with her deceased husband and our Lord and Savior.
Interestingly, this short description illustrates the recent findings about the science of walking. As the muscles contract, myokines (the “hope molecule”), dopamine, and serotonin are released, which contribute to our overall mental and physical well-being. They are biologically built-in antidepressants and provide a sense of hope and optimism. I couldn’t help but think about the apostles walking with Jesus.
My pilgrimage exceeded any expectations I could have had, and my heart was gifted by the time spent with my fellow pilgrims. You may wonder how this relates to the virtue of orderliness. The steady pace and rhythm of muscles contracting as well as being outside restores an interior order and space to just ‘be’. During the coming months of fall, I encourage you to take time for a long walk, either by yourself or with a companion. Leave your phone behind and experience the joy and unity of body and soul working in harmony, trusting that God is in the present.
