One of the delightful features in the Virtue Field Guide is the “Just for Fun” section, where we look at the wonder of God’s creation to discover a trait resembling a virtue. For docility, we learn about the Quokka, a small marsupial always eager to explore. They are naturally sociable and appear to have a smile – hence why they are nicknamed “the world’s happiest animal.” Of course, we know these actions are simply instinct, but we certainly experience delight upon seeing these creatures in God’s creation.

Indeed, when we encounter a person who is docile, this same feeling of delight and sense of ease is present. They are open, receptive, willing to be taught and often have the same “adorable smile” at each encounter.

As we begin a new academic year, let us seek to educate youth in this important virtue. It is one which gives shape to how they respond to adults, each other, and ultimately everyone they may work for. We can all agree that being around open, flexible, and receptive people brings us delight and a smile. However, we must also remember to be this way toward others and to stay attuned ourselves to how we live docility. Do others have an “adorable smile” when they encounter us?
