15 Meditations in Honor of St.Dominic
Saint Dominic died in 1221. On Tuesday, May 24th, 1233, as part of the process of canonization, his tomb was opened and his relics solemnly translated to a new tomb. For centuries, Dominicans have kept this anniversary in two ways: with a memorial every May 24th, and by honoring Dominic on every Tuesday of the year.
In 1631, when Florence was being decimated by an epidemic, Dominican friar Michael Bruni called on all the faithful to implore St. Dominic’s prayers by going to confession, receiving Holy Communion, and meditating on the saint’s holy life for fifteen consecutive Tuesdays. (The number fifteen was in honor of the fifteen mysteries of the Rosary.) The plague ended in Florence, and numerous other miracles and cures have been attributed to this devotion since then.
