“Faithful in small matters.” Here lies the essence of responsibility, or, to put it differently, the concept of a responsible person. I have been fortunate to have served in administration in a school and now Openlight Media. In this position, I can witness the fruit of those who are faithful in small matters.

Qualities of a Responsible Person

What does a responsible person look like? Responsibility means good communication skills, foresight, planning, docility, and a level of maturity that doesn’t get stuck in paralysis. The small matters include collaboration and communication with one’s team, as well as reaching a conclusion that reflects the collective work. Once a project reaches the point of review, it is put forth for feedback. Here is where the rubber meets the road. The responsible individual receives feedback and offers his or her perspective without deflecting or making it personal.

The Joy of Responsible Maturity

If one can embrace feedback and constructive criticism with a bit of detachment, then it becomes easier to hone the skill of being faithful in small matters. There is nothing more delightful to an administrator than a teacher or employee reaching this level of responsible maturity. If one lacks the necessary virtue of responsible maturity, the whole process of collaboration and growth will be draining and not life-giving. This is a two-way street, and all involved need to work together for the shared end.

One Small Act

Hopefully, you can see how the virtue of responsibility is multi-faceted and connected to the other virtues. It begins with attention to detail, reliability, and self-awareness. During these long summer days, I encourage you to spend time cultivating responsibility, one small act at a time.
